The NRM Makerere University Chapter has written to President Yoweri Museveni following the arrest and suspension of several students during the recent series of demonstrations against the new tuition policy. The chapter has also chosen to speak up because of the university management’s failure to come up with a common ground with students on the same tuition policy.
In a letter dated 24th October 2019, Macxzzon D. Muhwezi, the chapter’s Chairman informed Museveni that over 2000 students have dropped out of Makerere due to tuition related matters.
“It is very much unfair in the sense that, the academic year 2018-2019, more than 2000 students dropped out of Makerere University because of tuition related matters. As a matter of fact, at School of Social Sciences alone, 173 students dropped out and others didn’t sit for end of semester exams.” Reads part of the letter.
The letter also explains to the President that some female students have resorted to alternative indecent activists in a bid to raise their tuition. In the same letter, the chapter requested Museveni to pardon all their suspended colleagues who participated in the demonstrations.
“It is from this background Your Excellency that we kindly request for your immediate and urgent intervention in this 15% tuition increment crisis. We also propose that our fellow students, who have been suspended because of the demonstration against this tuition increment be pardoned Your Excellency.” The letter reads further.
Over 50 students are currently behind bars and others nursing wounds following their participation in demonstrating against the university’s new tuition policy, which they believe to be unfair.
