Judith Nalukwago, a Makerere University student aspiring to become the next Guild President has run to court to challenge the recent guidelines issued by the University Dean of Student, Winifred Kabumbuli.
According to Kabumbuli, all students planning to contest for guild leadership positions should be registered students of Makerere University for the academic year 2019/2020 and should have no retakes in that particular academic year.
Nalukwago has run to Court seeking its intervention on the ongoing “interference” by acting Dean of Students who in her April 27 letter to EC issued guidelines for the elections few days to the earlier communicated polling day.
According to Nalukwago, Kabumbuli’s act is targeting her and other aspiring leaders who wished to be on the ballot.
“Today we went to Court seeking its intervention on the ongoing illegal & selfish acts of by acting Dean of Students Winifred Kabumbuli who in her April 27 letter to EC issued guidelines for the elections mid-way the campaigns. We have applied for a judicial review and orders,” Nalukwago tweeted on Wednesday.
“This was all done to the prejudice of me and other similarly situated candidates who legitimately expected to be on the ballot papers for the long-awaited voting exercise scheduled for Friday, 30 May 2021.” Another tweet by Nalukwago reads.
According to the Dean of Students April 27 letter, the Department of Legal Affairs guided that only registered students for the academic year 2019/2020 without retakes should be nominated by the electoral commission.
The Dean’s communication leaves Makerere students in suspense as it remains unclear whether Nalukwago will be nominated or not. Other students are claiming that the move was made to favor NRM’s Dickson Muhwezi who had been dropped over missing marks in this academic year, 2020/2021.
