The Makerere University Council has reached a decision to halt the cutting of allowances of lecturers teaching evening students and instead recapitulated the situation for a period of three weeks.
After a meeting attended by MUASA executive and the university council, the vice chairperson Dida Ovungi said that, it was decided the decision to implement the payment of 25% allowances instead of 75% be halted for a period of three weeks so as to review the incentives which must be paid to all staff members of Makerere University.
At the same time, the MUASA chairperson, Muhammed Kiggundu called upon the help of the government in funding one of their own Professor Abasi Kiyimbi the deputy principal of Makerere university’s college of Humanities and Social Sciences who was diagnosed with cancer a flight to South Africa for treatment.
“We are even looking for support from government to fly out one of our fellow professors to South Africa for a liver transplant which is very expensive but because we don’t have insurance, we have involved government.” he said.
At the moment the teachers will resume teaching evening lecturers until a new communication is released from the council involving the matter.
