Makerere University’s School of Law has made Uganda proud once again on the international stage, as its moot team excelled at the prestigious 2024 The Jessup Moot Competition held in Washington D.C.
Led by Coach Winston Churchill Ruhayana, the team comprising Kalinda Jamada, Harry Mwesigwa, Omulungi Birungi, Mellissa Ankunda, and Tracy Nayiga showcased remarkable talent and determination throughout the competition.
Out of 143 participating universities, Makerere University secured an impressive 71st position, emerging as the top-performing African university at this year’s edition of the competition.
In the series of matches, Makerere University’s moot team demonstrated exceptional prowess, winning two matches and narrowly losing two others. Despite facing stiff competition, the team showcased outstanding oral advocacy skills, with commendable performances in each match.
Notably, Kalinda Jamada distinguished himself as the best African oralist, ranking 18th out of 523 participants. Following closely behind, Harry Mwesigwa claimed the title of the 2nd best African oralist, securing the 116th position overall.
Coach Winston Churchill Ruhayana expressed pride in the team’s achievements, highlighting the invaluable experience gained in leadership, management, and motivation throughout the six months of intensive preparation.
While celebrating the team’s successes, Coach Ruhayana also acknowledged areas for improvement, particularly in memorial writing, where Makerere University aims to enhance its performance in future competitions.
