Makerere University has released the cut off points for the Government (A’Level) admissions under the National Merit Scholarship scheme for the 2026/2027 academic year, giving thousands of A’Level candidates their first real indication of which programmes they qualify for at Makerere and the Makerere University Business School (MUBS).
The list, released by the Office of the Academic Registrar and stamped on 24th April 2026, covers cut off points for both STEM and non STEM (Other) programmes, with STEM courses further broken down by gender, as has been the practice in recent admission cycles.
Highest Cut Off Points
Competition for the most sought after programmes remains stiff. Bachelor of Laws (LAW) once again sits among the toughest programmes to enter, alongside Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MAM), which required 53.0 points for male applicants and 54.5 for female applicants.
Other highly competitive STEM programmes this cycle include:
- Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (CIV): 53.0 (Male), 52.0 (Female)
- Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS): 52.9 (Male), 54.4 (Female)
- Bachelor of Pharmacy (PHA): 52.9 (Male), 54.1 (Female)
- Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (ELE): 52.9 (Male), 51.1 (Female)
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (MEC): 52.9 (Male), 49.3 (Female)
- Bachelor of Optometry (BPT): 52.8 (Male), 54.2 (Female)
- Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering (BBI): 52.8 (Male), 52.4 (Female)
- Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (VET): 52.8 (Male), 51.4 (Female)
Health sciences and engineering programmes continue to dominate the top of the cut off list, a trend that has held steady over the past few admission cycles.
Lower Cut Off Points
On the other end of the scale, Bachelor of Statistics (STA) recorded the lowest cut off points on the entire list at 39.9 for male applicants and 40.2 for female applicants, followed by Bachelor of Science in Conservation Biology (BCB) at 41.8 (Male) and 42.0 (Female), and Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science (SAS) at 44.6 (Male) and 42.9 (Female).
Other programmes with comparatively accessible cut off points include Bachelor of Applied Art and Industrial Design (BID), Bachelor of Fine Art (BFA), and Bachelor of Science with Education-Economics (EEC), all clustering in the mid 40s range.
Non STEM Programmes
For programmes classified outside STEM, where a single cut off applies regardless of gender, notable figures include:
- Bachelor of Applied Psychology (APS): 52.5
- Bachelor of Social Work (SOW): 52.1
- Bachelor of Procurement and Supply Chain Management, MUBS (PSM): 52.2
- Bachelor of International Business, MUBS (BIB): 52.1
- Bachelor of Population Studies (BPS): 51.7
- Bachelor of Business Administration (ADM): 48.3
- Bachelor of Business Administration, MUBS (BBD): 47.8
- Bachelor of Commerce, MUBS (COM): 47.7
- Bachelor of Visual Communication, Design and Multimedia (BVC): 44.0
- Bachelor of Arts in Economics (ECO): 44.4
For A’Level leavers awaiting admission, these cut off points serve as the benchmark against which their weighted points from last year’s UACE results will be measured. Candidates whose points meet or exceed the published cut off for their programme of choice stand a chance of securing a government sponsored slot, subject to final verification and any additional requirements specific to individual courses, such as interviews for programmes like Law and Medicine.
Applicants are advised to check directly with the Academic Registrar’s office or Makerere University’s official admissions channels to confirm their status, as cut off points can occasionally be revised or supplemented with additional intake rounds depending on available slots.
CampusBee will continue to track updates on the 2026/2027 admissions process, including any revised lists or extended deadlines, as they are released by the university.
