Makerere University is yet again set to host the Kampala Geopolitics Conference for the fourth time. Spearheaded by the French Embassy in Uganda, this year’s conference was officially launched on Tuesday, 2nd November 2021 at Makerere University’s CTF2.
This year’s conference will be of hybrid format with physical sessions slated to take place from 10th November 2021 to 12th November 2021 at Makerere University Auditorium and virtually on Twitter Spaces under the theme “Crisis and Opportunity: Mapping the Geopolitical Importance of Africa”.
The annual conference aims at creating an interactive and dynamic platform for dialogue and free exchange of ideas cutting across contemporary local and international topics. This year will be no different, KGC will bring together key actors like journalists, political leaders and academics from across Africa and the EU involved in imagining the African continent of tomorrow.
While speaking at the launch, H.E Jules-Armand Aniambossou, Ambassador of France to Uganda revealed that the 4th edition of the Kampala Geopolitics conference will give room for sport as a soft power tool through the study case of Olympics and Paralympics.
“The panel regarding sport during the conference will be a platform to question (with transparency and honesty) the place of sport regarding international relations, global affairs and foreign policies.” Aniambossou revealed.
“The fourth edition of Kampala Geopolitics conference will also have the opportunity to discuss the development of a new Africa-European Union relationship within the framework of the post-Cotonou agreement signed last April. During the first semester of 2022, France will have the honour of presiding over the Council of the European Union. This panel will be an opportunity to rethink what brings us together, on a continental scale, and to discuss the axes of cooperation, the common objectives, and regional protocols between Africa and the European Union. “ He added.
The discourse is on topics around vaccination, pan africanism, climate change, sports and the olympics, trade, astro-politics, human rights, gender equality and migration among others. Some sessions will be broadcast on TV to allow for local and international participation. There will also be a live stream on our Kampala Geopolitics website, zoom and the social media platforms of the KGC partners.
The Conference is convened in partnership with the Embassy of France, Makerere University, UN Women, the French Institute for International and Strategic Affairs (IRIS), and Alliance Française Kampala.
