Makerere University Vice Chancellor Professor Barnabas Nawangwe has given a greenlight to the university electoral commission to resume guild election processes, a year after banning them.
In a letter dated 9th March 2021 addressed to Jackson Twijukye, the EC Chairman, Nawangwe directed that sensitization about e-voting should kick off immediately ahead of virtual guild elections.
“This is to lift the ban on the Guild election process to enable the Electoral Commission conduct sensitization on the proposed E-voting system with immediate effect. The SOPs by government should be strictly followed,” Nawangwe’s letter reads.
Makerere University Council on Monday, 1st March 2021 received a demonstration of the e-voting system ahead of the institution’s guild elections. If approved, Makerere University will hold virtual elections due to the outbreak of COVID-19.
It will not be possible for all scholars to be on campus at the same time to vote for their leaders following the ongoing staggered learning. The university’s aspiring student leaders are expected to hold virtual campaigns on social media and television stations.
On polling day, voters will use their students’ portal to vote for their preferred leaders after a set of guidelines expected to be issued by the university’s electoral commission.
