Prof William Bazeyo, a lecturer at Makerere University has won a health grant worth UGX 185 billion set to benefit the entire country through Makerere and the Ministry of Health. The grant has been offered by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) under the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).
The grant will take effect on October 1st and Prof William Bazeyo, who also doubles as Makerere’s Deputy Vice Chancellor (Finance and Administration) will serve as the Principle for the project dubbed “strengthening Uganda’s capacity for regionally centred and district implemented HIV and TB programming through health information systems, case-based surveillance, monitoring and evaluation and quality improvement support.”
According to Prof Barnabas Nawangwe, the university’s Vice Chancellor, Bazeyo’s grant is the largest single grant win by an academician in the history of Uganda

What is important about this grant is that it is to benefit the entire country through Makerere and the Ministry of Health. More details indicate that the grant will help the Ministry of Health to establish regional and national communication platforms to support the implementation, training and monitoring of health information systems, among other related activities.
The grant has come following another UGX 111 Billion for the project titled “monitoring and evaluation support project (METS) which has supported the Ministry of Health for the last five years. METS is scheduled to end on September 30th.
“I have won out of a competitive bid. it is going to run for five years and they will be disbursing $10 million (UGX 37B) per year to support the health ministry.” The excited Bazeyo said.
