The life of a one Ismail would be long gone by today had it not been for the Police to swing into action and save him from the angry mob of Makerere University Business School students. Ismail a ghetto chap who was allegedly stealing from MUBS Students who reside around small gate was unlucky today after being apprehended by the students who found him red-handed trying to make away with a student’s property.
On seeing an unusual face try to break into her room, Janet made an alarm that attracted fellow residents who are ever willing to answer to a ‘thief’ call at any time. At about 6am, heavy stamps were heard on roofs and wide screams clouded the slums of Nakawa as a signal of a thief was sent out.
Like a scene in the movies, Ismail was the one trying to get an escape route using the rooftops of the hostels. However, his luck ran out when he missed his step and feel right in the hands of his pursuers. Not waiting for any further instructions, students ganged up and beat the suspected thief to pulp as he begged for mercy from the students.
After several thumps & pulps from the angry students, he was tasked to speak out his fellow chaps who rob the students. He mentioned a few names and as soon as he was told to reveal their location, police came to his rescue.
Mob Justice as a mechanism has been highly instituted in the areas of small gate because police has now and then done nothing over the increasing cases of theft in the area.
“We are tired of thieves who are never apprehended and they are let go after days of arrest’, laments an angry student.
The OC of the area, Kyasiimire Collins calls upon the students not to institute mob justice as a mode of punishing the suspects but rather hand them over for legal action.
The frustrations are written on the faces of students in the small gate area as thieves have made a habit to rob them clean of all their property. A total of 10 theft cases are registered every week according to Nakawa Police and these are expected to increase in the festive season. The police calls and warns students to be extremely vigilant and cautious about late night movements. Some students have vowed not to come back in the area because of increased insecurity and fast-raising thefts.
