Last week different institutions both public and private carried their graduation ceremonies. However some officials from the public higher institutions of learning used it as a chance to raise their challenges to authorities.
During the 26th graduation ceremony of Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) on Saturday 26th October at the Kihumuro campus, the University Vice Chancellor Prof Celestine Obua expressed his concern on the lack of enough teaching staff at the university.
He explained that due to the increasing number of students at MUST, the provision of services to students by lecturers is becoming difficult. He requested the State Minister for Higher Education Hon John Chrysostom Muyingo to table the matter to the cabinet. In his response, Muyingo promised to table their concerns to the top management in the ministry.
The same cry was presented to Muyingo when he was the guest of honor at the 10th Graduation ceremony for Mulago School of Nursing and Midwifery on Friday 25th October 2019. The Principal of the School Ms Nampiima Eva Kakonge said that only 12 out of 66 staff members are on the government payroll, five of the staff on payroll are teaching staff.
The minister promised that the school will receive three tutors before the end of the month. He also advised the administration to note down all their challenges so that they can be discussed and resolved by the time of his next visit.
