Obed Obedgiu Derrick, a Makerere University student and aspiring Guild President who had emerged winner in the UYD/People Power primaries has withdrawn from the Guild Presidency race over unclear reasons.
Through his social media platform, Obed announced that he will not be offering himself as a candidate in the highly anticipated Makerere University guild elections, as the new election road map is yet to be released.
“Salutations friends, I shan’t offer myself as a candidate in the forthcoming Guild Presidential elections as was the case earlier. Thanks to all and sundry for the unwavering support.” Obed wrote.
According to sources from Makerere University, Obed decided to chicken out of the race to give way to fellow People Power member and aspiring guild president, Judith Nalukwago who also happens to be the outgoing Vice Guild President.
Obed, who had secured massive support had reportedly invested heavily in the guild elections before all universities were closed over COVID-19 scare. He had positioned himself as a student who cares for fellow students’ welfare to the extent of branding himself “strike machine”, a name he took over from the previous one, Wanyera.
Obed is also remembered for participating in the 15% tuition increase strike which saw a several students suspended, himself included.
