It is day four (4) of the unrest at Kyambogo University, and the latest information that we have obtained indicates; students under their Guild leadership have maintained their stand on the grievances over the tuition surcharge by the university administration, delayed allowances for government sponsored students, and late upload of marks on the portals.
In a reaction letter dated 4th May from the Guild President – Mr Wafula Edrine, the students’ Guilt leader demands that the University council addresses the concerns or else, no teaching activities will proceed.
“No student is allowed to attend any lecture or any other campus business unless in case of emergency situations for instance health emergency. Any student found to betray us will be answerable to the students’ body,” reads a warning by Mr Wafula.
This follows communication, on the same day, from the University Vice Chancellor – Prof Eli Katunguka in which he expressed ‘disappointment’ with the guild president over what he (VC) called “not heeding to council’s guidance” on amiable ways to settle the grievances.
Earlier, the top management resolved to effect the surcharge on delayed payment of tuition starting May 1st watering down a petition from students Guild leadership to have it (surcharge) waved. It’s upon that basis that discontent brewed amongst the students over the same.
In a related woe, still at Kyambogo, a section of lecturers mostly part-timers have vowed to follow suit with the students if their salaries are not paid according to a leaked screenshot we’ve seen.
A huge cloud of uncertainty now surrounds the banda-based institution with weeks left to exams.
