The state minister for Higher Education, Dr. Chrysostom Muyingo, has today morning come out to rubbish claims that the Parliament on Thursday voted on suspending the Makerere University tuition increment.
According to Muyingo, the education committee for guidance will study the matter and report back to parliament in about three weeks’ time.
“The matter was discussed on the floor of Parliament and it was agreed that the education committee studies the matter and report back to Parliament,” Muyingo explained before adding that “It is not true that the 15% fees increment in Makerere was suspended by Parliament yesterday [Thursday].”
Muyingo was clarifying on a story that appeared in the press today which indicated that the Parliament of Uganda voted to halt the 15% tuition policy at Makerere University. The policy has led to the arrest to several students while others were left nursing wounds after participating in a demonstration against it.
While talking about the same matter yesterday, the Members of Parliament called for a probe into allegations that students used drugs while demonstrating.
