Makerere University students this morning went on strike demonstrating the delay of issuance of Freshers’ Identity cards, transcripts for the students who graduated in February and other pertinent issues.
Earlier, police fired teargas and live bullets to disperse the protesting students but in vain.
Police have been engaged in running battles with the students since morning prompting arrests over ten students.
The Mak Deputy VC in charge of Finance and Administration released a statement promising to refund students part of their money meant for the issuance of identity cards under the Computerized Education Management and Accounting System (CEMAS).
“CEMAS developed some challenges and has been suspended till further notice,” reads a statement from Prof Nawangwe.
Adding that; “Management has decided that IDs for the first year students be issued under the previous arrangement. Management is doing everything possible to expedite procurement of the IDs so that they can be issued before the start of semester II examinations.”
Also, students claim that the online results system that was closed by the university management in the wake of forged marks scandal has affected them as they are unable to access last semester’s marks.
On March 20, 2017, the university management closed the online marks system and suspended the issuance of academic transcripts until the institution completes cleaning up the system after some staff infiltrated the IT and falsified some of the students’ marks.
The online marks system is used to enter and store student’s examination scores.
