The current students’ leadership at the Mukono based Uganda Christian University is only a few hours to handing over office to the next government which seems to have been in the long wait for this day.
The Guild Government which has been commonly known as the “23rd Guild Government” led by the Guild President HE. Agaba Kenneth Amponda, currently serving as the Speaker of the Uganda National Students Association (UNSA) will be handing over office officially this Friday, January 14 to the new Guild Government led by HE. Mirembe Racheal Sserwadda.
The ceremony will be held at the University’s Main Campus in Mukono.
According to our sources, the Minister of Information, Communications Technology and National Guidance Hon. Chris Baryomunsi is expected to be the Guest of Honour for the ceremony though he is yet to confirm his attendance.
UCU held its Guild Elections on 24th November 2022 where HE. Mirembe Racheal Sserwadda emerged as a winner with a good challenge set by Ayebale Phillip Bravo whose votes were so close.
The Guild President elect was then sworn in as the 24th Guild President and 3rd Female Guild President on 2nd December 2021 together with other elected guild officials.
It is clear there has been a delay for the ceremony as the outgoing government was expected to have left office by the end of last year.
According to Joel Peter Namugera, the Deputy Minister for Information in the outgoing guild government, one of the reasons for the delay was the tight schedule in the aftermath of the elections since the elections were held close to the start of the end of semester exams which forced the extension of the ceremony so as to allow the outgoing and incoming guild officials get time to prepare for their exams.
The “Amponda government” leaves UCU with a high take after having a smooth period in liaising with a number of achievements including the mega multimillion guild project which saw the installation of smart display screens and advanced litter bins around the Mukono campus in a bid to transform the university into a paperless campus.
Such achievements therefore leave a big task to the incoming government led by HE. Mirembe Racheal Sserwadda who seems to be stepping into very big shoes according to some students.
