On their joinery to becoming the leading university in the country, Uganda Christian University (UCU) has commissioned a bakery worth 400 million shillings. The commissioning ceremony was held on January 3, 2020 in an event presided over by the Vice Chancellor Rev. Canon Dr. John Senyonyi.
The bakery will work as training ground for students offering a bachelor’s degree in Tourism and Hospitality Management, supply confectionaries to the University and also boost hospitality and accommodation programmes which will expand to travel.
While speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Dr. Senyonyi noted that opening up a bakery was intended to promote vocationalism among students, raising some funds as well as getting their staff something to eat at a lower price.
“We have done this but it is not all about jobs and money, it is intended to promote vocationalism among our students, raising some funds as well as getting our staff something to eat at a subsidized price while doing work,” said Dr. Senyonyi.
According to Vanessa Ngango the Hospitality Officer, the expansion of this facility to the student community will improve their skills and also help them to make business for their survival.
“Expanding such facilities to the students’ community will allow them make some business and also improve on their skills,” Ngango said.
Ngango added that in five years to come UCU will be producing the best-trained students of Tourism and Hospitality Management who will be on high demand in the Job market.
The newly commissioned bakery has four chambers each of which can accommodate 52 loaves of bread, making an aggregate of 208 loaves of bread per baking.
