In her recent exclusive interview with Campus Bee, former Makerere University researcher Dr. Stella Nyanzi vowed to continue fighting for students’ rights especially those who have sued Makerere University over poor management.
Nyanzi, who is an aspiring Kampala Woman Member of Parliament further disclosed that she will also continue fighting for human rights, education reforms, as well as sanitation and hygiene in education institutions.
“As I articulated the issues of students at Makerere Institution of Social Research, I will continue articulating the issues of particularly post graduates and doctoral students because am for example supporting students who have sued Makerere because of misadministration of their courses.” Nyanzi said.
She further revealed that she will not be keeping quiet when it comes to tuition issues at Makerere. According to Nyanzi, parents and guardians should be included in the discussion of increasing tuition because they are key stakeholders.
“I want to talk about the tuition policy which has been very troublesome particularly in the last five years under the Vice – Chancellorship of Prof Barnabas Nawangwe and the predecessor Prof Ddumba Ssentamu. The idea of exorbitantly increasing tuition particularly for private students must be challenged.” Nyanzi said,
The aspiring Kampala Woman Member of Parliament showed her disappointment after learning that there are mob bedbugs in Makerere University halls of residence which wasn’t the case during her campus days.
“I have heard that students report they have bedbugs. What happened to fumigation? We never had bedbugs at Makerere. I have heard that the sanitation is wanting and particularly for women who have menstruation needs.” The worried Nyanzi said.
“Perhaps what I can do as Member of Parliament when I get there is to advocate for very specific reforms around education institutional sanitation and hygiene.” She vowed.
On her view regarding the future of education in Uganda, Nyanzi thinks that students should have a representative in parliament, something she vowed to lobby for once in power. The former Makerere University researcher also revealed that she will legislate for the whole country, not only for Kampala as many people would think.
