Kyambogo University continuing students who reported on Monday for lectures were disappointed after learning that their lecturers are on sit down strike. The disgruntled students, who have spent almost a year at home were warming up for lectures ended up roaming around.
According to Ankole Grace, a second year Kyambogo student pursuing a Bachelors Degree in Micro Finance, they are not studying despite showing up for on campus studies. Ankole revealed that she had forgotten the coursework she was assigned to do before adding that they are set to kick off new group discussions.
“After one year we have reported, it has not been easy because we have forgotten most of the coursework, we don’t know now we’re starting new discussions. As I have reported now, I haven’t seen the lecturer so it is really hard.” Ankole disclosed.
Sunday Geofrey is another Kyambogo University student who agreed that lecturers are on sit down strike, leaving them with no option but to roam around. Sunday further explained that he needs to be in class because his aim is finishing the course and focus on other things.
“During the lockdown we had very many challenges, we had no jobs, we had nothing. So I think coming back was a very good idea because we want to finish and go.” Sunday said before adding that “ No lecturers at all as you can see we are just roaming around”
Under the umbrella Forum for Academic Staff in Public Universities of Uganda (FASPU), lectures in government owned universities have continued to remain united despite several threats from the top leadership of their respective universities.
All lecturers resolved to remain on strike until the government fulfills President Museveni’s directive to enhance their salaries.
