The National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) has advised students to resort to walking or riding bikes to and fro school/campus during their study time when schools re-open in phases, starting September 20 (this month)
This is one of the various guidelines that were set as measures to curb the spread of Coronavirus amongst learners when academics resume.
Government last week came to a resolution to have schools re-opened starting with final year students in higher institutions and candidates in lower classes as feasibility of implementing the standard operating procedures (SOPs) is carried out in various schools to fully re-open for the rest of the classes.
This comes relatively after the Minister of Education, First Lady-Janet Museveni wrote a letter to the Finance Minister requesting him to release capitation grants for third term to the beneficiary schools.
“The meeting resolved that a phased re-opening of schools, starting with candidate classes be implemented starting September 20, 2020.” The letter read in part.
Other guidelines set by NCHE for institutions to comply with, are as follows;
- Mandatory COVID-19 screening of both students and staff
- Dis-infection of institutions currently used as isolation centres.
- Congregational gatherings for church, chapel or mosque are prohibited at the academic institutions
- Restriction of students movement when schools resume
- Social distancing, wearing facemasks and compulsory hand washing
- Restriction of entry to non-students or staff at the respective institutions
- Person(s) with temperature 37.6C or above will be required to take two more tests.
- Students from border districts to be tested before allowed into the institutions
- Students to move with IDs at all times.
- Students to be at their hostels/halls by 9PM
Meanwhile, majority of the Universities like Makerere, Busitema, Kampala International University among others have showed readiness to re-open the institutions and receive students back on the stipulated dates.
