Innocent Nahabwe, the CEO Galaxy FM has come out to advise this year’s Makerere University graduands that having a graduation gown or not on their big day doesn’t matter. Nahabwe also revealed that he did not even take his parents to Makerere last year when he was graduating.
Nahabwe, who many people believe to have mastered the art of running a small business also noted that unlike his course mates, he never held any graduation party.
“Last year, I graduated from MUK with an MSc Marketing. Unlike many graduands, I never bought a new suit, or carried my parents there …not even a graduation party after. The bazinyi surprised me with cake in the afternoon at work thereafter and that was all.” Nahabwe said.
“The real degree had been earned about 4 months earlier when I defended my research. With or without the gown, I still would have graduated.” Nahabwe added.
Nahabwe compared the recent graduation ceremonies to carnivals with a lot of tents and noise created by the music. In his view, there is nothing to look forward besides the same political speeches given at such ceremonies.
The business-minded Nahabwe also suggested that it would be better if every college at Makerere is given an opportunity to organized its own small grad ceremony, which he believes would be a success and more organized.
“Since MAK is now on the college system, can’t each college organise their own grad and make it nice, small and beautiful? Do we need the gowns anyway? Why can’t we recycle what we used for our daughters and brothers? Even wedding gowns can be hired” he wondered.
Ahead of the Makerere University 70th graduation ceremony slated to kick off tomorrow, only 7000 students have secured gowns yet over 13000 are expected to graduate.
