Julius Kateregga, the 85th Guild president of Makerere University has replied to the university’s Vice-Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe who recently warned the People Power leaning students’ leader to abstain from acts of hooliganism.
Nawangwe addressed a letter to Kateregga following his restless warning to the administration that he would lead students to strike over delayed internship money.
Through his official social media channels, Kateregga has replied to Nawangwe why sometimes there is need for industrial action especially when peaceful dialogues seem to yield no solutions.
“All those that seem to subscribe to industrial action as a tool for demanding for what rightfully belongs to them have been tagged ‘hooligans,’ both within the University and in the Nation at large.” Kateregga wrote.
“We however support in the strongest terms industrial action that is directed towards improving the welfare of ‘the hooligans’ of this Great University, especially when protracted dialogue seems not to offer immediate solutions.” Kateregga’s post adds.
Kateregga seems to insist on the plans he revealed during his campaign period, unlike most previous opposition leaders who switched sides (eating Mugaati) after sitting in office.
He further explained that the Guild leadership strongly condemns acts of destroying university property adding that they (students’ leaders) will continue to engage the administration through peaceful interactions.
