And the fight against Rape goes on and on! For those that have followed the #MeToo hash tag, you will testify rightfully that there is indeed a strong on-going online revolution against rape in the world generally and this fight didn’t spare Ugandan perpetrators either.
As most of you were merrymaking on 1st January, 2020, victims of sexual abuse and activists did decide to take on a “Name and Shame” campaign against sexual predators that would see some of your dear celebrities like XFm’s Denzel Mwiyeretsi get dragged on Twitter on allegations of Rape.
Worth noting is the fact that this is not the first time he has been involved in such mess. Just when we thought we had seen it all, one tweep only known by her social media handle @KWEZI for now revelled rather shocking news about a Makerere University Police Officer who at a fresher’s orientation last year told female students not to bother reporting a rape case to them if the girl went to a boy’s room willingly.
In fact, the same Police Officer is quoted to have closed off his assertion by stating that “A cow is for milking.” This statement by the Police officer raised two issues. Firstly, it raised the issue of consent. To many, this statement by the Police Officer seemed to imply that once a girl agrees to visit you, it means that she has automatically consented to your sexual advances. Secondly, it left the Public wondering whether victims should actually trust a Police or Justice System infiltrated by such cops.
The online struggle against rape on social media has crossed over to today with a number of victims of sexual abuse coming out to expose their abusers which leaves us wondering what more might be unearthed in the next few hours.
