In a bid to increase on admissions and accommodate more students, the Law Development Centre (LDC) opened up a branch in Mbarara last year. The campus is located in Kakiika, in the premises of what was formerly Eden International School.
News reaching us however is that the location has since become a crime haven. The Campus houses over 500 students this year alone and because it is a new branch, there are no investments in form of hostel rooms at the moment.
Gradually, the students have had to resort to local rentals and homes around the centre which has exposed them to so much, including robbers. A student, only known as Herbert has come out to reveal the state of insecurity in the area and ask that the responsible parties intervene.
“I’m currently at LDC Mbarara. We are over 500 students. There are no hostels, so we stay in rented houses. Of late, there has been a challenge of insecurity. Students have been robbed and beaten in their homes. It’s also alleged that 2 girls have been victims of rape.” Herbert revealed in a message shared by Bash Mutumba, a blogger.
The students seek the attention of authorities, especially the Police to have their situation handled and a safe learning environment accorded to them.
